Big Ben

Big Ben towerBig Ben is the face of London and arguably the most famous clock in the world. The name Big Ben actually refers to the large hour chiming bell rather than the clock or the tower, but it has now become associated with it all. The tower itself is part of the Palace of Westminster and is 96 metres tall (300 feet). In spite of a lot of modern development, Big Ben still dominates the skyline in this part of London.

It was designed by Augustus Pugin and built in 1859. In spite of its poularity as a tourist attraction, there is no access for the public, due to security reasons and also that there are no lifts.
