Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the Queen in London. It is located in St James park. It was originally known as Buckingham House and was first built for the Duke of Buckingham. Later King George III acquired it, but it was only after Queen Victoria came to the throne that it was turned into a palace and became the official residence of the monarch.

After her death Queen Victoria's memorial was built in 1911 directly in front of the palace.

The 19 palace state rooms are used for a number of functions, such as entertaining visiting world leaders. When the Queen is away in July and August, these state rooms can be visited. The rest of the year, visitors must view the palace from the outside and a good time of the day to visit is 11.30 (weather permitting, every week day in the summer and alternate days otherwise) when there is the Changing of the Guard when the brass bands parade as the guards are changed.
